A large enterprise running billions of daily requests might justify higher sampling rates or ServiceLens for specific critical paths, while keeping baseline sampling low.
Limitations That Matter in Practice#
Both X-Ray and ServiceLens have limitations worth understanding before you commit to a monitoring strategy.
X-Ray Service Map doesn’t show you services that aren’t traced. If you have batch jobs running on EC2 instances that process data, or if you have internal services that don’t send X-Ray telemetry, they simply won’t appear on your map. You might have a critical data pipeline that’s failing, but the Service Map will never show it.
X-Ray also struggles with asynchronous patterns.
