Protecting Your SES Sending Reputation: Reputation Dashboard and Best Practices#
Every developer who’s integrated Amazon SES into their application understands the power of being able to send email at scale. But with that capability comes responsibility. Your sending reputation is one of the most valuable assets you have in email delivery, and once it’s damaged, recovering it can take weeks or months. This article walks you through understanding your reputation metrics, recognizing the thresholds that put your account at risk, and implementing the practical measures that keep your deliverability healthy.
Understanding Your Sending Reputation and Why It Matters#
Before diving into dashboards and metrics, let’s establish why reputation matters so much. Internet Service Providers (ISPs) like Gmail, Outlook, and Yahoo monitor the behavior of every sender. They track patterns across millions of emails and build sophisticated models to distinguish between legitimate senders and bad actors. Your sender reputation is essentially your score in those models—and it directly affects whether your emails land in inboxes or spam folders.
Amazon SES doesn’t operate in a vacuum. You’re sending through AWS infrastructure shared with many other customers, which means both the reputation of your sending IP addresses and your individual account behavior contribute to delivery success. AWS takes this seriously, which is why they monitor specific metrics and will intervene if your account exhibits patterns associated with poor sender behavior.
Think of it this way: ISPs want to protect their users from spam. They’re willing to let legitimate senders through, but they need confidence that you’re not going to suddenly flip and start blasting unwanted email. Your reputation metrics demonstrate that you’re sending wanted mail to engaged recipients who expect to hear from you.
The SES Reputation Dashboard: Your Window into Email Health#
AWS provides the SES Reputation Dashboard, which is your primary tool for monitoring sending health. This dashboard is available in the AWS Management Console and displays real-time metrics that tell you exactly how your sending behavior looks to the rest of the email ecosystem.
The dashboard tracks several critical metrics, but two stand out as particularly important: bounce rates and complaint rates. These aren’t abstract numbers—they directly reflect what’s happening when your emails hit recipient mail servers.
Bounce Rate measures the percentage of emails that couldn’t be delivered. Bounces come in two categories. Hard bounces occur when an email address is permanently invalid—the domain doesn’t exist, the mailbox is closed, or the address was never real to begin with. Soft bounces are temporary failures, like when a recipient’s mailbox is full or their server is temporarily unavailable. The Reputation Dashboard focuses on bounce rate as an overall metric, combining these categories, because both signal problems: hard bounces indicate poor list quality, while excessive soft bounces might suggest sending to inactive users or having list issues.
Complaint Rate is the percentage of recipients who report your email as spam using the complaint mechanism built into their email client. This is the most serious metric from an ISP perspective, because it directly indicates that someone didn’t want your email. Unlike bounces, which can have technical explanations, complaints are a human judgment that your message wasn’t wanted.
Beyond these headline metrics, the dashboard also displays your sending quota and your email sending rate. The quota tells you how many emails you can send per 24-hour period (by default, 50,000 a day, though you can request an increase). The sending rate is your maximum emails per second—initially one per second in sandbox mode, but higher once you’ve requested production access and demonstrated good behavior.
AWS’s Reputation Thresholds: Know the Red Lines#
AWS has established specific thresholds that trigger account review or suspension. Understanding these numbers is essential because they represent the boundaries where AWS needs to intervene to protect the wider email ecosystem.
The bounce rate threshold is 5%. If your bounce rate reaches or exceeds 5%, your account becomes subject to review. This doesn’t automatically mean your account gets suspended, but it does mean AWS will investigate your sending practices. A 5% bounce rate suggests either significant list quality issues or a sending pattern that’s problematic. For context, most legitimate senders operate well below 1% bounce rate—if you’re approaching 5%, something is definitely wrong.
The complaint rate threshold is 0.1%. This is a much tighter threshold than bounce rate, and for good reason: complaints are direct signals of unwanted mail. Even one complaint per thousand emails can trigger account review. If your complaint rate reaches 0.1%, AWS will review your account. Unlike bounce rate, where technical explanations sometimes exist, complaints are harder to defend. A high complaint rate almost always indicates sending problems: either you’re not getting proper consent from recipients, you’re sending content they don’t expect, or your unsubscribe process isn’t working.
The implications of hitting these thresholds are significant. Account review can result in a temporary pause on your sending while AWS investigates. During this time, you can still send to your verified identities, but you can’t send to unverified addresses. For many applications, this is effectively a production outage. More severe violations can result in permanent suspension of your SES account.
Double Opt-In: Building Consent from the Ground Up#
The best way to avoid reputation problems is to never add them in the first place. That journey begins with how you collect email addresses. A single opt-in process—where someone enters their email once and immediately gets added to your list—is convenient for users but creates significant deliverability risk. Too many people mistype their email address, or worse, intentionally enter an email that isn’t theirs, or change their mind immediately after subscribing.
Double opt-in is the gold standard for email list quality. Here’s how it works: when someone enters their email address on your signup form, they receive an immediate confirmation email. They must click a link in that email to confirm they actually control that address and want to receive your messages. Only after confirming do they get added to your active mailing list.
This process is more friction than single opt-in, which means some potential subscribers drop off. But those who complete double opt-in have proven they genuinely want your mail. They’ve demonstrated engagement before they’ve even received your first real message. This dramatically reduces complaint rates because you’re only mailing people who’ve explicitly acted to confirm their interest.
Implementing double opt-in with SES is straightforward. When you receive a signup, generate a unique confirmation token, store it in a database with an expiration time (24 hours is standard), and send a confirmation email containing a link with that token. When the user clicks the link, verify the token and mark their subscription as confirmed. Only after confirmation should they be added to your regular mailing lists.
The SES integration is simple—you’re just sending two emails instead of one, and SES handles both with the same SendEmail or SendBulkTemplatedEmail API calls you’d use for any transactional mail.
List Hygiene and the Suppression List#
Even with the best subscription practices, your email list will gradually accumulate invalid addresses and users who should no longer receive mail. This is natural. The key is managing it proactively.
AWS SES provides a suppression list that automatically prevents you from sending to addresses that have bounced or generated complaints. When an email bounces or receives a complaint, SES adds that address to your account-level suppression list. Subsequent attempts to send to suppressed addresses are rejected by SES itself—the email never even gets queued for sending.
This is actually a feature that protects you. By preventing sends to known bad addresses, SES prevents your bounce rate from climbing and damaging your reputation. However, the suppression list isn’t visible in the console by default, and it’s easy to forget it exists. You can view suppressed addresses via the AWS CLI or by checking your account’s suppression list configuration.
Beyond SES’s automatic suppression, you should implement your own list hygiene practices. Periodically audit your email lists by reviewing bounce and complaint feedback from SES. Some email providers allow you to verify address validity before sending (through tools like address validation APIs), though these services come at a cost and aren’t always accurate.
More importantly, implement a feedback loop: when a user marks your email as spam or unsubscribes, remove them from future sends immediately. Some applications make the mistake of continuing to mail suppressed or complained addresses because they haven’t implemented proper feedback handling. This is a guaranteed way to tank your reputation.
You should also consider implementing an inactive address purge. If someone hasn’t opened or clicked any of your emails in, say, six months, they might be disengaged. Continuing to send to inactive recipients increases bounce and complaint rates without benefit. Some senders create a re-engagement campaign—sending a message asking “are you still interested?"—before purging. This gives the user a chance to opt back in, but it also gives them an easy out if they’ve lost interest.
Separating Traffic and Protecting Your Reputation#
One of the most powerful but underutilized strategies for reputation management is traffic separation. Not all email is created equal, and mailing 1000 marketing emails to a cold list carries very different risk than sending 100 transactional emails to users who just made a purchase.
The ideal approach is to use separate IP addresses for different types of traffic. AWS allows you to rent dedicated IP addresses for your SES account. These IPs are exclusively yours, and their reputation is determined only by your sending behavior, not by other customers. For a small premium per IP, you gain isolation from other senders and the ability to carefully control the reputation of each IP address.
However, not every application needs dedicated IPs. Here’s a more practical framework: at minimum, separate your transactional and marketing traffic using configuration sets. A configuration set is a named group of settings that you apply to emails at send time. Each configuration set can have its own event publishing settings, delivery options, and reputation tracking.
When you separate marketing and transactional email into different configuration sets, the SES Reputation Dashboard can show you metrics for each separately. This is invaluable for diagnosis. If your reputation is suffering, you’ll immediately know whether it’s a problem with your marketing campaigns or an issue with your transactional workflow. Often, you’ll discover that marketing campaigns are driving complaint rates up while transactional mail is clean—a finding that lets you adjust your marketing strategy without risking transactional deliverability.

Each IP builds its own reputation based on the quality of mail you send through it. This level of separation requires more operational overhead, but it gives you maximum control.
Using Virtual Deliverability Manager for Advanced Monitoring#
For teams sending significant email volume, AWS offers Virtual Deliverability Manager—a tool that provides deeper insights into deliverability performance. While the basic Reputation Dashboard shows you bounce and complaint rates, Virtual Deliverability Manager can give you per-domain and per-ISP breakdowns of your delivery performance.
This is particularly useful when your overall metrics are healthy but specific ISPs are having trouble with your mail. You might discover, for example, that Gmail is accepting 99% of your emails while Outlook is accepting only 75%. This kind of granular visibility helps you identify whether you have authentication issues, content problems, or IP warming that needs work.
Virtual Deliverability Manager also helps you track your sending patterns over time, understand peak sending hours, and get alerts if metrics trend in the wrong direction before they hit AWS’s thresholds. For developers managing high-volume sending infrastructure, this is well worth the cost.
When Your Account Comes Under Review#
Despite your best efforts, you might find yourself in a situation where your account has been flagged for review. Maybe you made a mistake in your list collection process, or you inherited a problematic email infrastructure. The important thing is knowing how to respond.
First, don’t panic. Account review doesn’t mean automatic suspension. AWS wants legitimate senders to succeed. Account review is their way of saying “we noticed something concerning, and we need to understand what’s happening before we let you continue.”
When you receive notification that your account is under review, you’ll typically get an email explaining why: perhaps your bounce rate exceeded threshold, or you’ve received complaints. The email will usually ask you to respond within a specific timeframe (often 24-48 hours) explaining what happened and what you’re doing to fix it.
Your response should be specific and honest. Explain exactly what caused the problem. If it was a list import issue, explain how that happened and what you’ve changed. If it was a content problem causing complaints, explain what the issue was and how you’ve corrected your email template or list segmentation. Generic responses saying “we’ll do better” aren’t helpful—AWS wants to see evidence that you understand the problem and have implemented solutions.
While your account is under review, you can still send to verified email identities. You just can’t send to unverified addresses. For many applications, this is functionally a production outage, so the faster you can get your account reviewed and reinstated, the better.
During the review period, take aggressive action to improve your metrics. If you’re in a situation where bounce rate is the issue, immediately remove hard bounces from your list and verify the remaining addresses. If complaints are the issue, review your recent campaigns and understand what prompted them. Did you send to people who didn’t explicitly consent? Was your content misleading? Did your unsubscribe process not work?
Once you’ve made improvements, contact AWS support and ask for re-review. Provide data showing that your metrics have improved: bounce rate is now under 1%, complaints have stopped, you’ve cleaned your list, whatever the case may be. AWS usually responds within hours to such requests once you’ve demonstrated improvement.
The best strategy, of course, is to never let it get this far. That means building reputation practices into your email infrastructure from day one, not bolting them on as an afterthought.
Building Long-Term Reputation Health#
Maintaining a healthy SES reputation is less about hitting home runs and more about avoiding errors consistently. Every email you send either builds or damages your reputation slightly. Small decisions add up.
Start by establishing basic hygiene: verify email addresses through double opt-in, implement proper suppression list handling, and respect unsubscribe requests immediately. Monitor your Reputation Dashboard regularly—weekly is reasonable, daily if you’re sending high volume. Set alerts so you know immediately if bounce rate or complaint rate starts trending upward.
Segment your sending: keep transactional and marketing traffic separate, use different configuration sets, and understand where problems originate. When you’re ready to scale, consider dedicated IPs to gain complete control over your reputation.
Remember that reputation is a lagging indicator. ISPs make decisions about deliverability based on patterns over time. You won’t suddenly lose all deliverability, but you will slowly lose it if you’re not careful. Similarly, rebuilding reputation takes time. If you’ve had problems, you’ll need weeks of clean sending before ISPs restore full confidence.
Your SES sending reputation is foundational infrastructure. Treat it with the care you’d give to your database or your API. Maintain it proactively, monitor it carefully, and respond quickly to any warning signs. When you do, your emails will reach the inbox, your users will see them, and your sending infrastructure will scale reliably.
