Disabling long polling to reduce latency is usually the wrong trade-off. If you’re polling every 100 milliseconds to catch messages within 100 milliseconds, you’re probably over-engineering. Very few applications need sub-second message latency. Negotiate your SLA upward if possible.
Ignoring dead-letter queues (DLQs) can hide cost problems. If failed messages are retried indefinitely and eventually land in a DLQ, you’re paying for requests that produce no value. Set up alarms on DLQ message counts and investigate patterns that send messages to the DLQ.
