While origin shield provides benefits for cache efficiency and protecting origins from traffic spikes, it doesn’t provide failover functionality itself. However, combining origin shield with origin failover can provide comprehensive protection: origin shield reduces the number of requests reaching your origins, and failover protects against origin failures that do occur.
For applications requiring active-active architectures where both origins serve traffic simultaneously, origin failover isn’t the right tool.
