The key limitations of Backtrack are crucial to understand. First, Backtrack is available only for Aurora MySQL, not Aurora PostgreSQL. Second, you can only backtrack within a specific window—by default, 24 hours, but you can extend this to a maximum of 72 hours by adjusting the BacktrackWindow parameter. Third, the longer your Backtrack window, the more storage AWS needs to maintain that change log, which increases your costs slightly.
When you initiate a Backtrack, you specify an exact timestamp to which you want to rewind. With Backtrack, you can immediately tell Aurora to rewind to 1:55 PM—well within the default 24-hour window. Within a few minutes, your cluster is back to its pre-deletion state. Your application continues to point to the same cluster endpoint; there’s no orchestration required to switch databases.
The RTO for Backtrack is typically measured in minutes, making it exceptionally fast for recovery. Point-in-Time Recovery: Building a New Cluster from Continuous Backups#
